The Last Cake
In Japan there is an NPO called Dream Cake Project.
The organization is supported by a network of bakeries around Japan. The participating bakeries would invite children to imagine their dreams and aspirations in form of a cake. The bakers would work with the children to bake and bring their creations to life.
The NPO is led by Chef Shimizu, a baker from Nagano, home to Winter Olympics in 1988.
The chef believes that making a good cake is not just about skills and knowledge although they are important. What is equally important is the intent. Why are we even making this cake?
From time to time, he would ask his team.
If the cake you’re making now, if that was the last cake the guest were to have in their life, would you regret it?
What a powerful question. And it’s one we can ask ourselves as well.
If the _____ you’re _____-ing now, if that was the last _____ your guest were to _____ in their life, would you regret it?
How would you fill in the blanks?
